My string line snapped in the middle of setting posts in Amarillo, and it made me think about how we used to do it
Was setting 14 posts for a split rail job in Amarillo last Tuesday and my string snapped about post 9, so everything after that was off by almost 4 inches. I used to carry two spools of line in my pouch when I started out and never had this problem, but I got lazy and figured one was plenty. Had to pull 5 posts back out of the ground and re-dig, which ate up half a day I did not have. My old boss back in the 90s would wind line around a coffee can so it never kinked, and I keep thinking about that can every time this happens. Does anyone still use the can trick or is it just me holding onto old habits?

Two spools is not old habits, that is just smart. String is cheap and re-digging posts is not. I keep a can in the truck too, but the real fix is a spare spool in the pouch plus checking tension every few posts. Four inches off after post 9 means you were pulling too hard or the line had a weak spot from kinking. Wind it loose on the can and it lasts way longer. Call me stuck in the 90s all you want, that can still works.
