PSA: I set posts 30 inches deep for 11 years before a guy in Tulsa showed me my mistake
I always thought deeper was stronger, so every wood post got buried 30 inches, no matter the frost line or soil. Then a guy named Ray on a job in Tulsa asked why I was digging so much and pointed out that in our clay, all that extra depth just made a water pocket that rotted the post from the bottom up. He showed me two posts I'd set 6 years ago on the same street, and the shallow ones were solid while mine were mush at the base. Anybody else change their depth based on soil type instead of just following one number?
