That one customer who measured posts with a tape from his pocket

I was setting a gate line in Flagstaff last spring when this old rancher walks up and tells me my 6 foot spacing was gonna fail because his ground swells after snowmelt. He knelt down, pressed a finger into the soil, and said "your auger's gonna hit basalt at 18 inches, better switch to concrete collars." I ignored him, hit rock on post three, and lost a whole afternoon plus $200 in extra labor. Anyone else ever get schooled by a random passerby who turned out to be exactly right?
