Went with post hole diggers over a gas auger in Wichita last weekend
Had 40 feet of privacy fence to set on Saturday and the ground there is straight clay, so I rented a two man gas auger first. It bogged down on the third hole and I ended up finishing all 12 with a set of manual diggers, took me about 5 hours but every hole came out clean. Anybody got a trick for clay that does not involve renting a machine twice?
Rented the same two man auger for my clay and had the same issue, the thing just spins on top once you hit that hard layer. Try soaking the spots with a hose the night before and let the water sit, makes clay dig way easier. Still need the manual diggers but at least you're not fighting it the whole way down.
