Just realized my brine ratio was off after a failed batch of pickles in Nashville last summer

Huh, I see it a little differently. A failed batch of pickles could be about something as simple as the vinegar strength or the age of your spices, not just the salt to water ratio. I've had plenty of times where I followed the brine perfectly but the garlic was old or the dill had lost its punch. Also could be the water quality if you're using tap water in a different city. Might be worth checking those things before you blame the ratio alone.

Had a friend who swore her pickles went bad just because she moved across town

Huh, that's actually a really good point. I used to think it was always the salt to water ratio too, but you got me thinking about that time my pickles came out sad and I had just switched to a new water filter without thinking about it. Never even crossed my mind that the garlic might have been the problem.
