My neighbor thought my kombucha scoby was an alien brain
He saw it in a jar on my counter and said, 'Is that the thing from the movie?' (you know, the one with the slimy monster). I had to explain it was just tea and sugar, but he still looked at me funny. Anyone have a good way to describe a scoby to a total newbie?

Honestly, telling him it's a friendly alien brain might have been easier.

Remember my buddy who tried to explain his weird home server setup to his landlord? Said it was for "data storage." Landlord thought it was a bomb. Cops came. Whole thing was a mess. He said later that just saying it was a fancy radio would have saved so much trouble.

That "friendly alien brain" line is so true because it feels like we've hit a point where the real explanation sounds more made up than a joke. People's eyes just glaze over if you start talking about servers or home labs. I've seen it happen when someone tries to explain a smart home setup or even a custom PC. The simpler, weirder lie actually makes more sense to them because it fits in a box they understand from movies. It's easier to say "it's like a robot helper" than to explain the real tech that they'll assume is either a bomb or a way to spy on them.

I used to get annoyed when people didn't get my tech projects. Now I see the alien brain story is just a better way to talk. It cuts through the fear and confusion right away.
