My sauerkraut batch got mold on top after 10 days of fermenting

Oh man, that's rough. But here's something people don't talk about enough - are you sure it's actually mold? Sometimes what looks like fuzzy white stuff is just kahm yeast, which is harmless. Kahm yeast sits flat and looks kinda wrinkled or powdery, while real mold is fuzzy and sticks up. I'd scrape off the top layer, check if it smells okay underneath, and taste a tiny bit before tossing the whole batch.

Wait, you actually taste it after scraping off the top layer? That seems like a big gamble to me, even if it's just kahm yeast. I've had batches go bad before and the smell was enough to tell me something was off without putting it anywhere near my mouth.
