Question about that time my kraut turned grey on day 3
I was in my garage in August checking my first batch of sauerkraut and found a nasty grey film on top from leaving the lid cracked, so I scraped it off, tossed the top layer, and it still smelled fine after another week - has anyone else saved a batch that looked that bad?

Man, your first batch turning grey hit me right in the gut. I did the exact same thing with my first batch last summer when a fly got in the crack. Scraped it, tossed the top layer, and crossed my fingers. It turned out fine actually, just a little funky on day one. I figure if it smells okay and isn't fuzzy, you're probably good to go. Worst case you learn what not to do next time, right?

Go with your gut on this one. I had a similar scare with a batch last year and just scraped off the top layer, kept it going, and it was fine by day three. If it smells good and ain't moldy, you're probably overthinking it.

Buddy of mine did the same thing with his first batch of kombucha, scraped off some fuzzy stuff and just hoped for the best. It worked out fine but he said it had a weird aftertaste for like a week, so yeah, learn as you go.
