Realized my kombucha SCOBY was getting eaten by fruit flies, swapped to a cheesecloth cover and it worked way better

i mean, is fruit flies eating your SCOBY really that big of a deal? mine got a little chewed up once and the kombucha turned out fine. kinda feels like overkill to switch the whole cover.

Wait, didn't you guys used to think the same thing? I actually used to be on your side, Emma. I figured a few fruit flies couldn't matter that much. But after reading what Brooke said about them laying eggs, I gotta admit it changed my mind. It's not just about the SCOBY looking chewed up, it's about the whole batch getting contaminated over time. Swapping covers feels like a pain, but it's way cheaper than throwing out a full jar of kombucha later. So I'm switching my vote to Brooke's side now.

overkill to switch the whole cover" is kind of a wild take. fruit flies lay eggs in the SCOBY and that can mess up your brew over time. cheesecloth is cheap and works, so why not just do it.
