Switched from air drying jars to a dedicated drying rack after losing 3 quarts to a cracked lid last fall

The airflow makes a way bigger difference than I expected and I haven't had a single seal failure since, has anyone else noticed better ferments with proper drying or am I just lucky?

Has anyone else found that switching methods like that just clicks everything into place? I had the same thing happen with my kraut after I stopped using those mesh lids and went back to weights. Cracking a jar like that is such a bummer, but it sounds like you figured out the better way to go about it.

Pfft, it's just jars, not that deep.

You're right, it's just jars of vegetables. People get way too wound up about exact methods and equipment for what's basically salted cabbage. I've got a dozen jars in my pantry right now that all turned out fine with just normal lids and whatever weight I had around. The whole debate about special lids versus glass weights versus whatever seems like overkill for something people have been doing in clay pots for thousands of years. If a jar cracks, it sucks, but it's not a sign from above that you need to change your entire system.
