Took me 8 months to figure out I was using tap water for my kombucha SCOBY
I kept wondering why my batches tasted like a swimming pool until I saw a post about chlorine killing the bacteria, and I switched to filtered water and now it actually works, anyone else make that mistake with their first brew?

Wait, are you serious? That took me way too long to realize too. I was so frustrated for months wondering why my SCOBY looked sad and my brew tasted like chemicals. Finally a friend was like "dude, do you have a water filter?" and I felt so dumb. It's honestly such a common mistake because no one tells you tap water is basically poison for the good bacteria. Now I just use a cheap Brita pitcher and it's night and day difference.

Right? Its like how nobody warns you that "organic" dish soap can still kill your starter dough. The world is full of these little traps where the "normal" thing to do totally messes up the one thing you're trying to do.
