Appreciation post: My uncle told me to double my rate for my first web design job

He said to charge $800 for a simple site, not the $400 I was going to ask. I was scared the client would walk, but they agreed right away. It made me realize I was selling myself short from the start. Has anyone else had a family member give them pricing advice that actually worked?

Yeah, that's the best advice. I had a cousin tell me the same thing about my first few freelance jobs, and it totally changed how I see my work now. I mean, I was doing these full branding packages for like nothing, basically what @anthonyrivera said about the free pizza, but for actual money that still felt like nothing. It's crazy how we just assume we have to start cheap to get anyone to say yes. Your uncle was spot on, and it's awesome the client just went with it. Makes you wonder how much money we all leave on the table at the start.

Wish my uncle had given me that advice before I did three logo designs for what amounted to free pizza.

Feel your pain, traded a website for concert tickets once.
