Charged $50 for my first logo back in 2012, felt like a scam artist
I landed my first freelance gig through a friend's dad. He needed a logo for his landscaping company in Detroit. I spent 3 hours in Photoshop and asked for $50, thinking that was a lot. He paid me $200 instead and told me I was underselling myself. Has anyone else had a client basically set your price higher than you asked for?

That's a great story and it says a lot about the kind of person you are. When someone pays you more than you asked, it's usually because they see the value in what you're doing, even if you don't. That client probably had a firm handshake and looked you in the eye. He knew you were starting out and wanted to set you on the right path, not just for his own benefit but for yours too. It's a rare kind of honesty, especially in business.

There's a book called "The Art of Getting Started" that talks about how people fresh into freelancing often undervalue their own work because they focus on time spent instead of the value created. That client saw you solving a problem for his business, not just making pixels dance for 3 hours. Sounds like he was the kind of guy who knew that a strong first impression on a logo could bring in way more than $200 down the road. Did you ever end up raising your rates after that or did it take a few more jobs to click?
