Hot take: that $75 "market rate" number you saw in a Facebook group is not real
I was at a coffee shop in Tucson last month and overheard two guys at the next table quoting someone $75 for a logo because that's what a Facebook group told them was the going rate. Here is my problem with that: the group is full of people who just started and they all repeat the same number back to each other, so it sounds like a rule when it's really just an echo. My first paid job was a $250 flyer set and I only got there because I picked a number based on my rent, not on a stranger's post. Where did you actually pull your first number from, a real person you know or a forum?
So what happens when that $75 number actually works for someone just starting out and they land the gig? I get what you're saying about the echo chamber, but some of those folks in the groups are quoting real jobs they finished, not just making stuff up. The number has to come from somewhere, and if a beginner has zero clients and no mentor, a forum might be the only place they can read what others charge. My first paying gig was $50 for a band poster and yeah, it was low, but it got me a referral that turned into a $400 album cover two months later. The point is the number matters less than what you do with the job after you get it.
