Question about pricing my first logo job after hearing a designer at a coffee shop

I was grabbing a coffee last week and overheard a graphic designer telling someone she charges $500 minimum for a logo. I was gonna ask for $50 for my first freelance logo gig. Should I still go that low or aim higher since I have zero portfolio?

That $500 designer likely has a portfolio and experience backing her rate. Start at $50 to get your first few clients and build samples, then raise it after you've proven yourself.

$50 for your first logo is fine. I mean @wade_anderson is right that you need samples, but this whole "attracting the wrong clients" thing gets blown out of proportion for a one time $50 gig. Just do the work, get the money, and move on.

My first logo I charged $40 and honestly I wish I had started at $50 like you're thinking. The problem with going too low is you attract clients who don't value the work, and then they want endless revisions. I agree with @wade_anderson that you need to build a portfolio first, but $50 is already rock bottom for a logo. Spend that extra $50 on a good stock photo site or a font license instead of losing it to a low rate. Keep the scope really tight too - tell them 2 concepts and 2 rounds of changes, then extra fees for more.
