Quoting an hourly rate for my very first job cost me $400 in unpaid screwups
When I took my first freelance job out of Aurora last spring, I charged $25 an hour because I was scared to ask for more. The job took 19 hours instead of the 12 I guessed, and I ate all 7 of those extra hours without a word, so I basically paid to work. Nobody talks about how an hourly price punishes you for being new and slow, and it teaches the client that your mistakes are free. Now I bid a flat number I can stand behind, even when I'm guessing. What did you charge on your very first job, and did you end up working for less than you planned?
