Rant: my old roommate in Phoenix scared me straight about my first rate
My old roommate works in video and he called me last week after I bragged about landing my first copywriting gig for $150. He did not say congrats. He just asked how many hours the job would take, and when I guessed 10, he did the math out loud and it came to $15 an hour before I even paid taxes or bought my own software. Then he brought up his first freelance edit in Phoenix back in 2019, where he charged $200 for a weekend job and spent 22 hours on it, and he says his client still refers other people to him at that $200 number because that is what got filed away. That part made my stomach drop. My rate is not just this one job, it is the number my first client writes down and passes to somebody else, and I basically set the floor for myself at $150. He told me to go back with a real quote and a scope of work before I touch the project. So now I am sitting here drafting a message that says $600 and trying not to back down. Has anyone gone back to a client to raise a rate you quoted too low, and how did you word it without losing the gig?
