Showerthought: I went from quoting $75 a logo to $400 and the only thing that changed was how I counted my time
For my first 6 months freelancing I charged whatever felt low enough that nobody would say no, so like $75 for a full logo. Then a designer in Austin told me to track every hour for a month, and it turned out a "simple" logo was taking me 11 hours between sketches, revisions, and emails. I bumped my rate to $400 flat and stopped losing money, but honestly I'm still second guessing if flat rates are better than hourly for first timers. How did you all figure out your number for job one?
Wait, 11 hours for a "simple" logo? I gotta ask though, did you ever figure out which part of that 11 was the actual design work vs the stuff you can't really bill for like client emails and sitting there staring at fonts? Because if 6 of those hours were just back and forth, a flat rate is basically charging every client for the one difficult client you might get. So when you did the math on that month of tracking, did you divide your target hourly by your real hours, or by some made up "efficient hours" number? I'm curious how you landed exactly on $400 and not like $275 or $600.
