The $500 minimum I set for myself got beaten by a $40 deposit rule I read in an old Freelancers Union email
Everyone in here keeps saying to set a big minimum for your very first gig, like $500 or don't bother. I went looking for proof and found a 2019 Freelancers Union email that said deposits are the real problem, not the total number. It said 68% of unpaid invoice cases came from jobs with no deposit at all. So I took a $180 logo job in Austin last week with $40 down before I started, and the client paid the rest in two days. Who else here charges a small deposit instead of chasing a big minimum on gig one?
