TIL the average first freelance job pays way less than I thought...
I was reading a report from the Freelancers Union last week and it said the median price for a first gig is around $150. I just charged $75 for my first website fix and felt good about it... now I'm wondering if I left money on the table. Where did you guys find good info on what to charge starting out?

Honestly that report sounds about right in my experience. For a first website fix, $75 isn't bad at all. I found looking at other freelancers' listed rates gave me a better feel than any report.

Yeah I used to think you had to start super low to get any work at all, but @the_ben is right about checking other people's rates. I looked at what folks on Upwork were asking for similar small fixes and realized I was charging half. That report is a good wake-up call, $150 sounds way more doable for a first project. I'd feel way better about that price for even a few hours of work.

My buddy Jake charged $50 for his first WordPress fix and three months later found out the client expected to pay triple that. He still brings it up every time we grab a beer.
