Undercharged my first client by $200 because I didn't account for setup time

Last month I landed my first freelance graphic design gig through a friend. I quoted them $150 for a logo, thinking it would take me 3 hours. But I spent 2 hours just on the initial consultation and gathering brand materials. Then another 4 hours on drafts and revisions. By the time I finished, I had worked 9 hours total. At $150 that worked out to about $16 an hour, which is basically minimum wage where I live. I learned the hard way that you have to include all the prep and back-and-forth time in your pricing. Has anyone else figured out a good way to estimate those hidden time costs upfront?

$16 an hour for a logo, you basically paid them to learn that lesson.

$16 an hour for a logo design, that's practically charity work (or self-sabotage, take your pick). At least you paid in time instead of actual cash, so that's a win, right?
