That's a tough lesson. Happens to a lot of freelancers starting out though. Next time, get it in writing before you do any work. A simple email agreement can save you from that headache. Live and learn, right?

Whoa, I gotta disagree a little. An email agreement is better than nothing, but I've learned the hard way that some folks just won't pay no matter what you have in writing.
