I used to think dyed carnations were a cheap cop-out until a guy in Dayton set me straight
I ran a small shop on 5th Street for 11 years and turned down dye work every single time. Thought it was tacky and lazy. Last spring a guy came in wanting 24 bright blue carnations for his mom's 80th, and I told him no. He just nodded and said his mom had a stroke in '19 and blue was the only color she still recognized. He wasn't mad, he just said thanks and started to walk out. I dyed them that night, took 3 hours and about $14 in dye, and hand delivered them Saturday morning. Honestly I have said yes to every dye request since then. Anybody else had a customer flip their whole opinion like that?
Man, come on, one sad story doesn't make dyeing flowers a real craft all of a sudden. The dye job itself still looks fake, that blue is never a color a carnation would grow in, and most shops that do it are just covering up old stock that's about to turn brown. You changed your whole rule over one guy with a good reason, but what about the next ten people who just want neon flowers for a party and don't care about the flower at all? A one-off act of kindness for a sick mom is not the same thing as saying dyed carnations are good, and deep down you know that. You did a nice thing, sure, but that doesn't make the product itself any less cheap looking.
