Old lady at the farmer's market taught me something about arranging stems

I was selling bouquets at the downtown farmer's market last Saturday when this older woman stopped at my table. She picked up one of my mixed bunches, turned it over, and said "you cut all the stems the same length, don't you?" She showed me how she used to stagger the cuts so each stem sat at a different height in the vase without needing extra filler. I re-did my whole display on the spot using her tip and sold out in 2 hours. Anyone else pick up a random trick from a customer that totally changed how you work?

Read in a gardening book once that staggered stems lets water travel up easier since they're not all crammed together at the same spot. Sounds like that old lady knew her stuff.

Actually came across something similar in a botany article that talked about how plants arrange their vascular bundles. The staggered setup basically creates a spiral flow path, which apparently reduces resistance because the water isn't fighting against itself at every junction. Makes sense when you picture it like a crowded hallway versus a winding staircase.
