Pro tip: I lost a $600 wedding order because my cooler was 4 degrees too warm
Two summers back I had 30 white hydrangeas in my cooler set at 38 degrees and by Saturday morning the heads were done, just brown mush. I had to call the bride two days before her wedding in Nashville and tell her I couldn't deliver what she ordered. Now I keep a cheap thermometer hanging at eye level and check it twice a day, and I write the number on a whiteboard so I can't fool myself. The cooler dial lies, the thermometer doesn't, that is the whole trick. What temp do you all run for hydrangeas versus roses?
My buddy runs a small flower shop over in Franklin and had the same thing happen with his hydrangeas last June. He swore his cooler was fine because the dial said 40, but turns out the thing was cycling wrong and it was really sitting around 45 in there. He lost a whole bucket of blue ones that he was saving for a funeral arrangement, which was just brutal to explain. Now he does the same thing you do, cheap thermometer clipped right up top where he can see it, plus a tiny notebook where he logs morning and night temps. He runs hydrangeas colder than roses, around 36 to 38, and roses he keeps closer to 34 so they don't open too fast. Did you figure out the temp thing on your own or did somebody else have to learn it the hard way first?
