Unpopular opinion: That fancy floral foam everyone loves is actually terrible for the environment
I was reading through a study from the UK last night about how floral foam breaks down into microplastics in the water supply. The numbers surprised me... something like 90% of floral foam ends up in landfills or waterways. Everyone in my shop swears by the stuff for stability but I'm starting to think we should all go back to chicken wire and moss. Even the "bio-friendly" versions still have plastic binders in them from what I read. Has anyone else looked into this or am I overthinking it?

That 90% stat lines up with what I found from a Dutch study that tracked foam particles all the way into North Sea sediment samples. Nobody talks about the manufacturing side either - making the stuff releases formaldehyde vapors that florists are breathing in daily. I switched to pea gravel and reused glass frogs last year, haven't missed the foam once.

Yesss pea gravel is so much better and lasts forever.

Has anybody looked into what happens when that formaldehyde reacts with the floral dyes they mix into the foam? I read a paper from an OSHA report that said the combo creates trace amounts of chloroform gas, which is heavier than air and collects right at the base of arrangements where florists are bent over working. That might explain why some studies found higher respiratory issues in flower shop workers compared to funeral home staff who handle less product.
