Why does nobody talk about how a $2 bunch of carnations taught me more than my design classes
I was at the Portland farmers market last month and an older woman named Ruth stopped at my stall, picked up a plain bunch of carnations, and said "these are the hardest flower to sell and the most honest one to arrange." She ran a shop in Sellwood for 22 years and told me brides always want peonies but the carnation is what taught her stem length and balance. I watched her strip the lower leaves and build a whole centerpiece out of stuff I would have tossed in the bucket. Now I put one carnation bunch on my work table every morning and my arrangements have gotten tighter. Does anyone else have a cheap flower they swear by for practice?
