TIL that skipping a phone call cost me a freelance sale

I mean, I always believed that responding fast to emails was enough to keep clients happy. But last week, I had a buyer who was ready to make an offer on a condo. We only communicated through messages, and I figured it was all set. Then they went quiet, and I found out they signed with another agent who called them daily. Idk, maybe it's just me, but that mistake made me see how easy it is to lose a deal without real conversation. Now I make sure to call every new lead, even if it feels extra. It’s already helped me secure a listing I would have missed before.

How many calls do you make daily now?

My average is about eight, but it took months to get there. I started with a goal of two, like clairep10 said about building the habit. The post-it note trick she mentioned is solid, I use one for basic talking points. The real shift happened when I stopped counting the bad calls and just focused on making the next one.

Aiming for five is my bare minimum (some days that's a win). I keep a post-it with three bullet points by my phone so I don't blank. Honestly, hitting any set number, even just two, builds the habit faster than you'd think.

My call volume went from near zero to a truly sad number, like three. It turns out my fear of phone talk was more expensive than I thought. Now I have to psych myself up like I'm calling to cancel a gym membership, but for money. The sheer awkwardness of my first few calls was its own kind of penalty. It does work though, even if my opening line is usually just me clearing my throat.
