My accountant friend in Boise asked me what my 'walk away' number is for a project.

We were having a beer and I was complaining about a lowball offer. He said, 'If you don't know the exact dollar amount where you say no, you'll always say yes.' I'd never set a firm line like that before, always just guessed. It made me realize I've probably lost money by not having a clear bottom line. How do you guys figure out your absolute minimum rate for a job?

My Boise friend's accountant brain is terrifyingly correct.

Yeah, that idea seemed too rigid at first, but it really does stop you from taking bad deals.

Your "walk away" number should include the hidden cost of saying yes to a bad deal, like @tyler_young's friend hinted.

Tyler's right, that hidden cost can mess up your whole year.
