That broken surge protector turned hidden fee I missed

Last Tuesday my power strip died during a storm. I went to buy a new one at the hardware store on Elm Street and noticed the price was $35 for a simple 6-outlet. I grabbed it, got home, and realized I already had two of these in my closet. I spent $35 on something I didn't need because I forgot what I had. That got me thinking about all the little tools and supplies I buy twice because my workspace is messy. Has anyone else lost money this way on things like cables or memory cards?

Did you check if the store accepts returns on surge protectors?

Stopped this from happening to me by keeping a small notebook taped to my tool drawer. I just jot down what I buy or already have before I leave the house. It saves me from buying duplicate cables or screws constantly.
