That free invoicing tool I swore by for 2 years cost me $400 in late fees

I used to use Wave for all my invoices because it was free and seemed fine. Then last month I noticed 3 clients paid me 2 weeks late and I had no way to auto-charge late fees. Turns out their payment reminders are super weak and you can't set automatic penalties. I switched to Freshbooks after doing the math and realized I lost around $400 over 2 years from people paying late. Has anyone else found that free tools end up costing more in the long run?

Man that SUCKS, sorry to hear about the $400 hit. I totally feel you on the "free tool costing more" trap. I used Wave for a bit too and their late payment features are basically non-existent. Switched to something paid myself after I had a client ghost me for 60 days and realized I had no way to charge interest or penalties automatically. It feels like these free apps bank on you not noticing the hidden costs until they add up.

Totally agree, "free tool costing more" is the worst lie we all fall for.

Wait, was that with Wave specifically or just the free plan in general? I had almost the exact same thing happen to me, not with Wave but with Zoho's free tier, and I was stuck chasing a guy for 3 months with no late fee option. It's wild how they just leave you hanging with no way to automatically ding people for being late, you know? You end up either eating the loss or spending more time than it's worth being a bill collector. I tried adding a manual late fee line item once and the client just ignored it, so that plan backfired too.
