The day I realized my 'emergency fund' was just a savings account with a nicer name
Last March, my laptop died right before a big client deadline. I panicked for a second, then remembered I had an emergency fund with $1,200 in it. Problem was, I'd already mentally spent that money on a vacation later in the year. It hit me that I never actually labeled it in my bank account or kept it separate. Has anyone else realized their 'emergency fund' was just a fancy label for their regular savings?

Is it really that serious though? @keith164 makes a good point about the separate account thing, but I'm not convinced labeling money differently changes much. I've got my savings in one place and just treat it like a no-touch zone for non-emergencies, and it works fine. Aren't we just overcomplicating things by pretending a different account name magically fixes self-control?

Oh man, I felt this in my bones. I had the exact same wake-up call when my car broke down and I realized my "emergency fund" was just being used for takeout and random Amazon buys. Have you thought about opening a separate account just for that?

Biggest trap honestly @the_laura. It's like our brains just treat all money in checking as "extra" until something actually goes wrong. Separate account is a game changer. Out of sight, out of mind, that cash actually stays put.
