Appreciation post: my neighbor who swore by threaded rods for bike storage

My neighbor Mike kept telling me to use threaded rods and flange nuts instead of those plastic hooks for hanging bikes in the garage. I thought he was overcomplicating things until last weekend when my buddy's $15 hook snapped and his mountain bike crashed onto my lawnmower. Mike helped me install 3 rods above my workbench for about $12 total and they've held my two bikes for 6 months without slipping. Has anyone else tried this setup or got a better way to keep bikes off the floor without spending a ton?

What size rod did you use for that? I tried 3/8 inch but found the threads tore up my tires after a few weeks so I had to wrap them in old inner tube strips. Did Mike give you any tips for protecting the rubber or did you figure that out yourself?

Did you try sliding a piece of pvc pipe over the rod first?
