My neighbor Steve changed how I see pegboards after 10 years of hating them

and what really got me was how he had them mounted on this old french cleat system instead of just screwing straight into the wall. he could swap out whole sections in like 30 seconds if he wanted to change the layout. i always thought pegboards were permanent once you put them up, but watching him rearrange his workshop in 5 minutes was kind of mind blowing. now i'm looking at my garage differently, trying to figure out if i can do something similar without having to tear out all my existing shelving first.

Oh man that is such a good point about just adding plywood on top! Ive been wanting to do something similar in my garage but kept thinking it would be this huge project. Now I'm wondering if you could even do a partial french cleat system where you only convert one wall at a time. Like put the cleat strip up on the wall you want to be flexible and just hang the pegboard on it. That way your existing shelves stay put and you can slowly swap stuff over as you find time. Plus you wouldnt have to worry about matching the old shelving to new stuff since theyre separate systems. I might actually try this in my own garage now that I think about it.

French cleats are genius for exactly that reason. You could probably just add a piece of plywood with the cleat on top of your existing shelving to get the same setup without tearing everything out. That way you keep your storage but get the flexibility too.
