My accountant's advice about filing in Delaware backfired hard

He said to register my LLC in Delaware for the tax benefits, but when I got audited by my home state of California last year, they hit me with a $3,200 penalty plus back taxes because I was actually operating here. Has anyone else run into this cross-state mess?

Oh man, that whole "pick the best state" thing is such a trap. It's like when people buy a cheap fixer-upper house thinking they'll save money, but then the plumbing explodes and they're out twice what they planned (happened to my cousin in Fresno). The bigger pattern I see is that shortcuts almost always cost more in the long run, whether it's taxes, car repairs, or even meal prep kits that claim to save time but then you spend an hour organizing the weirdly packaged ingredients. Everyone's looking for a magic workaround, but the system is usually set up to catch you eventually, you know?

Oh man, that's brutal. I think people hear "Delaware LLC" and assume it's a magic shield but it's more like a trap door if you're not careful. California will absolutely hunt you down for that income tax even if your paperwork is elsewhere. Seems like the safest bet is just filing where you actually live and work, even if the taxes sting a little less on paper somewhere else.

My buddy from Seattle tried the Delaware thing too, thought he was being smart saving on taxes but Washington came after him for over $4,000 because his whole operation was in a coffee shop downtown. Turns out the loophole only works if you actually have a physical presence there, not just a mailbox. He ended up paying more in penalties than he ever would have just filing locally.
