PSA: That $200 filing service charged me extra and still got my forms wrong

I used one of those online incorporation filing services back in March for my LLC. They advertised a flat $200 fee but tacked on another $85 for "expedited processing" I never asked for. Then they sent the paperwork to the wrong address in the state filing, so I had to pay $50 to amend it myself. Total wasted time was about 3 weeks waiting for corrections. Has anyone else had a filing service mess up something this basic?

Honestly, I had to go down to the county clerk's office last Tuesday to file my DBA paperwork. I figured it would take 20 minutes max but I ended up waiting 2 hours because the system was down. The lady at the counter said they process over 300 applications a week and half of them have basic errors. It got me thinking about how much time I waste on admin stuff that could be automated. Stopped by the old county clerk's office last week and felt ancient

I had to file some papers for a new LLC I'm helping a buddy set up, so I walked into the same county clerk's office I used back in 2009. The whole place is different now. They got this digital kiosk where you can pay with a card and get your stamped copies in like 5 minutes. Back in my day you had to stand in line for an hour and fill out triplicate forms with a pen they chained to the counter. Has anyone else noticed how much faster the state filing times have gotten? I remember waiting 6 weeks for my first EIN confirmation.

That $400 registered agent service I signed up for turned out to be a total ripoff

I paid $400 for a registered agent service that promised to scan and upload all my state mail the same day. Last month they sat on a tax notice for two weeks and I almost missed a filing deadline. To be fair, a friend of mine uses the same company and says it's saved him from missing three lawsuits. So is it worth the money or should I just use my home address and save the cash? Anyone else deal with this tradeoff?

My first EIN application mistake still haunts me 3 years later

Back in 2021 I was setting up my pest control LLC and thought I could save money by doing the EIN application myself online. The operating agreement I skipped came back to bite me hard

I incorporated my LLC in Oregon back in 2019. I used one of those cheap online filing services and checked all the boxes quick. I figured the operating agreement was just optional paperwork nobody actually reads. Fast forward to last spring when my partner decided to walk away from our business. Shoutout to the lady at the county clerk's office who saved my LLC filing

I was about to submit my formation docs online last Thursday and got totally stuck on the purpose clause wording. The clerk at the counter in Nashville just said 'keep it simple, say general business activities.' She even pointed out that I was using the wrong NAICS code on line 6. That 2 minute chat saved me from a rejection and a $25 refiling fee. Has anyone else had a random office worker teach them something they should have known?

Unpopular opinion: Registered agent services are mostly a scam for small businesses

I used to pay $150 a year for a registered agent in Dallas because everyone said you need one. Then my accountant showed me I could just use my own address and be my own agent in Texas. I saved $150 and nothing bad happened. Why do people keep pushing these services on solo LLC owners when you can literally just use your home address lol
