That convo with my mail carrier about chasing payments really hit me
Was chatting with my mail carrier last week about how my side hustle is going, and she flat out said 'you know you got a 50% chance of being paid late if you don't ask for half upfront'. She's been running a small cleaning business for 8 years and swears by this rule. I always thought it would scare clients off, but she showed me her spreadsheet with 20 active clients and zero late payments. Has anyone else tried the half upfront approach and seen less chasing?

Most people respect that you have bills to pay" - but some clients just don't have the cash flow for half upfront though.

Half upfront changed everything for me with my freelance bookkeeping. I was nervous about losing clients too, but honestly most people respect that you have bills to pay yourself. The ones who get weird about it are usually the ones who would have paid late anyway. So you're actually filtering out the problem clients before you even start working with them, which is like a bonus. Way less chasing now, way more peace of mind (seriously, it's worth the awkwardness).
