The signed quote that saved me $800 in a small claims mess in Tucson
I used to think getting a signature on a quote was just paperwork, not protection. Last year I did a small bathroom repaint for a guy who swore he'd pay cash when it was done. He didn't, and when I tried to push back he said we never agreed on the final number. I had texts but no signed paper, so the judge in Tucson basically shrugged and I ate $800 in labor and materials. Now I bring a clipboard with a clear price sheet and a line for their signature before I even unload my ladders. It took one lost job to make me realize that a handshake means nothing when someone decides to forget. Has anyone else had a verbal deal blow up worse than mine?

Small claims courts usually want some kind of paper trail, but a signed quote doesn't always mean you're fully covered. A judge in Maricopa County told me once that a signature on an estimate is basically just proof you agreed on a starting price, not the final scope of work. You might want to add a line that says "this price is final pending no changes to materials or labor" so they can't claim you added extra stuff later. Signed paper is better than nothing, but it's not the bulletproof shield people think it is.
