My buddy swore by white noise machines for focus so I dropped $40 on one...
Now I can't hear my own typing over the rain sounds and my neighbor's dog barking somehow got louder, anyone else find those things useless for actual work?

Fellow white noise machine victim here, I feel your pain (really, I can still hear that dog through my earbuds). Paid $35 for one that promised "ocean waves" and got what sounds like someone flushing a toilet in the next room over. The worst part is I can't return it because I threw away the box like a dummy. Now it just sits on my nightstand collecting dust, mocking me every time I walk by.
