People treat coworking spaces like they're getting ready for surgery or something haha. It's just a room with desks and wifi, nobody owes anyone a silent environment just because they put on some headphones. If you want dead quiet, stay home or go to a library, you know?

My co-working spot in Wicker Park had that same problem for a few months. I started keeping a pair of over-ear headphones on my desk even when I wasn't using them, just as a signal. It actually helped a little, your mileage may vary.

Three months of empty headphones on my desk and all it did was make people think I was listening to podcasts constantly. Now they feel like they can interrupt me with random questions about my "music taste" anyways. Truth is, if someone's determined to talk, a pair of over-ears is just a speed bump, not a stop sign.
